The molten Zerg home world of Char. For a high-res version click here

I've always thought that out of all the races that the folks over at Blizzard have thought of, including anything from the WarCraft universe, the Zerg are the most unique and the most interesting. Something about the way the whole race being very primal, very organic, appeals to me more than futuristic space-age weapons. The Zerg don't have any technological weapons like every other race Blizzard has conceived, instead, they are their own weapon. They don't research and advance, they evolve. They don't carry machine guns, psi blades, swords or axes, they have claws and acid spit.

It's like combining the bugs from Starship Troopers, the tremor worms from the movie Tremors, and the collective conscience of Star Trek's Borg to create a species that better resembles what a U.S. military experiment-gone-wrong would look like than anything else.

Blizzard has taken the time to write up the lore behind the Zerg home planet of Char as well as post a few renderings of what the planet looks like. There is also one new screenshot of a Zerg base on Char surrounded by a Terran assault force. Dead center is the Queen standing tall, defending her hive.

To head to Blizzard's Char page and read the lore click here. For the rest of the artwork and screenshot read on.

Looks like a great place to spend some vacation time, though I'm not sure its very tourist friendly.

Yeah, haha, I love laying out at a scorching hot pit of magma. Who needs the beach, honestly?
